Saint Dominic Academy Student Named Semifinalist in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program

Jersey City, NJ – Saint Dominic Academy is proud to announce that Mila Varela ’26 has been recognized as a Semifinalist in the prestigious 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program. Mila is among more than 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide who were selected in the 71st annual competition, representing the top-scoring high school seniors across the country. These academically talented students now can continue competing for some 6,930 National Merit Scholarships, worth nearly $26 million, to be awarded in the spring of 2026.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must meet several requirements to advance to Finalist standing. Approximately 95 percent of Semifinalists are expected to achieve Finalist status, and about half of the Finalists will go on to earn a National Merit Scholarship, receiving the coveted title of Merit Scholar®.

The National Merit Scholarship Program, established in 1955, is an independent, not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds, as well as by about 300 business organizations, colleges, and universities nationwide. Winners of the National Merit Scholarships will be announced from April 2026 through July 2026.
